The life of Magnum PA
Aloha- I have been asked to share a little about my experience working as a PA in Hawaii. I have to thank Luke, my best buddy, for coming up with "Magnum PA". Unfortunately I don't have a Ferrari...yet- it's just backordered:) I also don't have nearly as much chest hair as Tom Selleck, to roll out of my unbuttoned shirt which also does not flow in the wind with my make believe Ferrari. ANYWAY- The clinic is an impressive organization who really have a vision for this surprisingly poor community and actually get things done. They do more than just talk about it and have lots of meetings- things happen which is very refreshing for me. Not only have they expanded the clinic building I work in 5x (at least), but also have a pediatric clinic, pediatric dental office, mobile dental van, another clinic opening up north, and a homeless clinic. It is exciting to be a part of such a dynamic organization. I had the opportunity to work at the homeless clinic last week and really enjoyed it. It is very simple- but it makes a difference with these men and women who are in desparate need of medical and spiritual help. They all have quite the stories and I continue to get glimpses everyday of the "underbelly" of this island of paradise. I hope to me able to get involved more over there however I can. Generally speaking my patients thus far have been very gracious and thankful for their care. In community medicine you will always have the crazies, the drugies, and the drunks- and you do what you can with what you have. I pray to God everyday for patience, wisdom, and perseverence and thank Him every night for providing. I feel like I have really found a closeness to God that I haven't had before through all of this and the last year with my dad's cancer. He has provided every NEED to my family and I, and I can rest in His promise to continue to do so without fail.
I am able to ride my bike to and from work everyday which has been great to force me to exercise regularly. I listen to James McDonald on my iPod while I ride which is exceptional. I am currently going through a study called "Ordinary You, Extraordinary God" which is a great reminder how I am nothing without Him and through Him all things are possible according to His will. "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." (Matthew 23: 11-12)
I am kind of rambling on, but thanks for reading (or at least skimming) Please keep in touch!!
Aloha- Chris

Chris, Thanks for sharing. It's good for us to remember that paradise doesn't mean everyone is happy and wants not. There are people in need everywhere and they are lucky to have you!
